My home office

I am working on getting settled in my new place in Venice Beach but since I don't have internet yet or direct TV, I go to my other "office" which is basically Vanessa's living room! It has been nice getting up in the morning and coming over here for work- I definitely get much more done here because I can focus on my work (and not my apt!) and knock stuff out. It will be sad once I do get set up at home because since Vanessa works from home too and is in the on-line world, I can bounce stuff off her and she knows all about the tech side of things, which I have only scratched the surface. She has been a great help and I've learned a lot from her from the short time I have been working here! Just wanted to give her a shout out and I think even when I do get set up, I will still come over here and work at least one day a week!!!!

A Day at the Beach

Just wanted to post some pictures from our day at the beach! Vanessa, Norah and I went down to Venice Beach down the street from my house so we could have lunch and play in the sand! Norah LOVED it and she played non-stop for 2 hours! We walked down to the water and we jumped waves for a while and Norah was fearless.. she started running to the waves instead of having the waves come up to the shore. We rolled up our pants but that didn't stop her from getting completely soaked. The water wasn't too cold surprisingly, there were even guys surfing and body boarding with no wet suit... but I don't think I could have been so brave. I am sure we will have many, many more afternoons like this one.

San Francisco with Kim

This has been quite an eventful week. As you know, last weekend I moved into my place so I have been trying to get settled in, which includes trying to find furniture to fill my place, and still trying to learn my job and get my travel under control. Things are coming along- slowly but surely.

Right now, I am in San Francisco heading back to Los Angeles and I've been here since Tuesday meeting with the NBC station here. Kim, one of my co-workers, used to handle this market so he is here with me handing off the station to me and doing meet and greets with the sales team. I have learned so much these last couple of days with Kim and with every market trip I am feeling a little bit more comfortable with my job. I know I still have a lot to learn but there is no doubt that I will always have a lot to learn in this job, where things change by the minute.

On this market trip, Kim and I were able to get out and explore a bit and one night, we went to the Sheeba Lounge for Ethiopian food, its on the corner of Filmore and Geary. There is live music there and although the service was a little slow, the ambiance was nice, the people are great and the food was very good. Although we were exhausted from a very, very long day- we had a great time.I was able to spend a little bit of time with my brother and my friend Jackie while I was here. We went to this great tapas place last night called Ramblas (hope I spelled that right) and again, the food was terrific! We then headed over to Cafe Revolution and again, because it was such a long day- we made it an early night- not to mention that I had an 8am flight back to LA! Its great to be able to go to these markets with the other reps and it will really suck when I have to travel on my own. But I am lucky to have some great markets and at least have some family and friends in the places that I go!

Thanks Rose!

Just wanted to give a shout out to my sister Rose for the beautiful flowers! Thanks Rose so much for thinking of me and the very awesome gesture! With the 3 pieces of furniture I have in my place so far, these flowers really brighten up the place! They brought a smile to my face and I was very much surprised to find out I had a delivery when my landlord Chris called me. Thanks again for making my day...

Roger comes to visit!

Well, I was in Las Vegas and Albuquerque this past week with my boss David so that's why I haven't had time to update my blog. I did want to write about my last weekend.. my brother Roger came in for the weekend and it was his first time in LA... too bad he had to spend it the way he did. He graciously offered to come in town to help me move to my new apartment. I couldn't thank him enough for coming- he was a life saver!

It was a long couple of days, but all went off without a hitch! Ok- so I had actual movers come move the heavy boxes- but it took a lot to tell them where we wanted them to go! After they moved everything- which was actually a lot of nothing with no furniture- Roger and I spent the rest of the weekend unpacking everything and we did a pretty good job! Here are just a couple of my rooms-the kitchen, the study (which still doesn't have the door installed on the long closet that goes across the room and my living room where eventually I will get a couch and a tv and stuff! Unfortunately, Roger didn't get to see too much of LA, but we did go out to eat at the awesome Fred 62 right by Ron's house and since I got in a little bit late, we didn't actually even eat until 11pm! We also got a break on Sat afternoon when Vanessa came over and we finally got lunch around 3pm. We explored a little bit down by the beach and ended up eating at this great little Italian place called C&O's which was actually the same place we all had dinner at for Emma's birthday! Afterwards, we stopped by to get some ice cream and then took some pictures down by the beach- it's so beautiful down there. I love this little area and can't wait until you guys come visit! I am having my bed delivered this weekend and hopefully i will be able to fill it with everything else soon! Until I get my internet and tv hooked up, I will be back and forth from Carolyn's to my place until I get everyhing set up!

Riza has a new pad!

Well, its a bit smaller than I'm used to-- ok-- ALOT smaller-- but I am soooo happy to be in my own space. I live in a 2 bedroom and 1.5 bath with a cute little kitchen and living area. Roger comes in town tonight from San Fran and will be here through Monday to help me with things. Above is a shot down the main drag- Washington Blvd. and at the end of this street is the beach! I am a 4-minute bike ride to the beach and everything that I need is about 5 blocks away. I can ride my bike everywhere but the best thing about it is it is close to LAX and I never have to get on the freeway to get to the airport!!! That is a huge bonus since I will be traveling alot for work but this move will cut down on my commute by 75% from when I lived at Ron's place. Below are pics at the end of the street where there are some cute shops and lots of bikers! Its also close to Abbott Kenny, similar to Magazine street- but beachy. Ron- gots to give you props for letting me stay with you- you don't know how much you helped me and I don't know what I would have done without you. I owe you one... come over and I'll cook you some set-it-and-forget-it!

In Portland visiting Johanna and Geoff

Its been 8 years since I've seen Johanna and Geoff (pronounced Jeff, although I like to call him Gee-off) and when I saw them it was like we never missed a beat. We immediately started to reminisce about old times and we figured I've only met Geoff about 4 times (in the last 11 years they have been together) but I felt just as close to him as I did my great friend Johanna, who I went to college with and who was my room mate sophomore year at Loyola. I ended up having many pleasant surprises during my stay in Portland but let me first start off by telling you the real reason I was there- for work. Portland will be one of my markets that I will handle for IB and the station there is the FOX affiliate. My direct contact will be Kelly Martin and turns out that Kelly and I used to work for the same company, Advance Internet, except I worked for NOLA.com and she worked for Oregonlive.com- small world. My boss Dave flew in from Minneapolis and we had a productive meeting at the station and a really good client call. So after our appointments, we went to the Paragon for some after work drinks and happy hour on Friday. Rose also happened to be in the Portland area visiting a friend so she met up with us as well. Johanna and Geoff did a great job of showing me around Portland, taking me to Hawthorne street (my first day there) and some really cool places around their quaint neighborhood. I love where they live, there are so many cute places to go in walking distance, friendly neighbors and lots of greenery. Here is the house that they bought 6 years ago and have fixed up (they did most of the work themselves!) and its just beautiful on the inside and out. They even have a wine cellar in the basement and that's also where Geoff makes his beer -- from scratch! On Saturday, they took us to the Stormy Morning Winery which took about 30 minutes to get to and the ride out was incredibly scenic. 7 of us picked over 1,100 pounds of grapes / 40+ five gallon buckets full in less than 3 hours! Here is a picture of us before we started picking- From left to right its Sydney and Paige, Pat, me, Tom, Johanna, Rose, Stephan (their friend from Jackson Hole and he was going to run the Portland marathan the next day!), Bill (owner of the winery) and in the front, my buddy- Geoff.
Geoff made sure to keep us focused and in-line! Afterwards, they had a bbq and a spread of food. The weather was just perfect so we spent all afternoon at the winery and thought we were only going to be there for a few hours and ended up there for much longer. The only downfall was the yellow jackets- they were out in full force and only one of us got stung and it wasn't too bad- but they love those grapes. During the processing part- when we would stick the grapes in the machine to lightly crush and de-stem- that is when those yellow jackets were the worst. There are wayyyy too many pictures to post here,so you can click here for more pictures to be uploaded on flickr soon!
I also want to give a shout out to my friend Diane Penny, who I met for dinner on Saturday night. Her and I worked together for 3 years when I worked for Advance Internet/NOLA.com and she worked for Oregonlive. It was crazy talking to someone on the phone for all this time and never knowing what they looked like. It was great to meet her and looking forward to many more drinks since I will be coming to Portland often! Cheers Diane!
